Abstract: | The dissertation argues that this culture lacks any planning ethic directed toward the socially equitable and environmentally sustainable management of forests. Arguing that this is a critical oversight in a country where the majority of forests are owned under customary forms of land ownership, and where the majority of the population still rely on the forests for most of their subsistence needs, the dissertation advances two general strategies that attempt to inject more equitable and environmentally sensitive planning actions into the forest management process. |
