Abstract:Quantum theories are filled with predictions which defy any classical analog. Perhaps the phenomenon which is most bizarre from a classical perspective is entanglement. This effect is the driving force behind the growing interest in quantum information. From entanglement, one is naturally led to the concept of entanglement entropy as a measure of the maximal amount of information which can be stored in a system. We shall begin the second part of this thesis by reviewing the role of entanglement entropy in quantum mechanics and in 1+1 dimensional quantum field theories. We shall then discuss entanglement entropy for Chem-Simons gauge theories, which is of direct interest in theoretical constructions of topological quantum computers.
