Abstract:The multimode optical fiber (MMF) channel is studied both experimentally and theoretically. Based on experimental results, the MMF is identified as a slowly time-varying fading channel with two-dimensional spatial freedoms. The capacity of the MMF is determined to be proportional to the signal-to-noise ratio. A direct multilaser and multidetector transmitter-receiver scheme is proposed and experiments were conducted to demonstrate the feasibility. It achieves the channel capacity asymptotically.
