Abstract:Natural languages have various ways of referring to a part of an entity denoted by a nominal phrase. One of these ways is to use common nouns that are described as relational nouns denoting part-whole relations between two entities. There is another method, however, to express a part of the entity without using such common nouns. In the partitive, the quantifier by itself is used to refer to a part of an entity (e.g., three of the students ). This study examines partitives in Korean and English and argues that partitives share the structure with other constructions expressing PART-OF relations with common nouns. That is, the quantifier in the partitive is different from the ordinary quantifier that directly combines with an NP in that it is a relational quantity noun denoting a PART-OF relation. A larger goal of this dissertation is to propose that there are generalizations in the syntax and semantics of natural language expressions which are used to refer to parts of entities.
