Abstract:A study of methyl and 2-ethylhexyl phthalates was done as a function of mole fraction in acetonitrile and 1,4-dioxane. The dilution allowed investigation into intramolecular non-coincidence, which has not previously been studied. Upon dilution which removed intermolecular interactions, ortho- and meta-phthalates showed a negative non-coincidence value due to intramolecular interaction of the carbonyl vibrations. As expected the ortho-phthalates show stronger intramolecular interactions than the meta-phthalates. The para-oriented phthalates had a non-coincidence value of around zero upon dilution, indicating no intramolecular interactions due to the greater distance between the carbonyls.
