Abstract:Previous studies of Congressional Republicans have focused mostly on the latter's support for the Truman administration's containment policies. This approach overlooks the significance of domestic politics in relation to foreign affairs. My dissertation shows how Republicans used the anti-communist consensus to define and promote domestic aims that were in place before the containment strategy was articulated.
