Abstract:Many documents have been published describing the current MARC system, the procedures and computer programs that are used at the Library of Congress (LC) for the MARC Distribution Service and other projects for divisions within LC. This paper attempts to explain the rationale of the system, to summarize what exists today (the results of the efforts of 1967-1969), and to describe the emerging plans for the next generation of the MARC system (1970-1971).
