Abstract:The third and last chapter is entitled "Productivity and Saving Channels of Economic Growth as Latent Variables: An Application of Confirmatory Factor Analysis". It is well-known that the rate of economic growth per capita can be decomposed into two sources: total factor productivity and capital per worker. Our claim is that the measurement of these sources of growth suffers from serious drawbacks, since they are intrinsically unobservable. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of a statistical technique especially designed to deal with unobservable, or latent, variables: Confirmatory factor analysis. Fourteen variables used in growth regressions are studied in this light, with auspicious results.
