Abstract:The final chapter investigates the doubling of Confederate cotton bond prices between December 1863 and September 1864 despite Confederate defeats at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in July 1863. Offsetting adverse war news were movements in the price of the cotton collateral of the war bonds.
