Abstract:We develop a space-time, finite-element analysis to simulate the indentation process accurately. The space-time nature of the code allows high degrees of time refinement in the region of interest immediately beneath the indenter, thus improving the computational efficiency of the simulation. The code also tracks the contact interface exactly via a node movement algorithm. We also develop a space-time, finite-element code to examine a viscoplastic material with small elastic dilatations. The flow rule and dislocation evolution equations are based upon the BCJ model of plasticity.
