Abstract:This research examined the human resource development (HRD) profile of three different Illinois social service organizations (ISSOs). Surveys were sent to the director, president, or chief executive officer in ail Illinois homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and child crisis centers to describe the HRD profiles of their organizations. The profiles examined the frequency of HRD activities, the job functions responsible for HRD, and the barriers to HRD in the organizations. Comparisons were made between the frequency of HRD activities by ISSO, number of employees and volunteers, and number of people served. Interviews were conducted with several organizations in each type to assist in the interpretation of the survey results. Implications for practice and future research in the field of HRD were discussed.
