Abstract:The last fifty years have seen an explosion in the number of new works written for the clarinet. Composers have made thorough use of the clarinet’s large range and vast dynamic capabilities and have introduced extensive extended techniques. In many ways, Finnish composers have been leading the way in this new focus on clarinet music. In an effort to examine this growing repertoire, this document explores four twenty-first century solo and chamber clarinet compositions by contemporary Finnish composers, including Magnus Lindberg’s Acequia Madre (2012), Kaija Saariaho’s Duft (2011), Kalevi Aho’s Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano (2006), and Antti Auvinen’s Eliangelis (2005). This exploration includes the provision of background information, analytical overviews, and performance ideas for each piece.
