Abstract:Harpist Ann McLaughlin discusses the creation of a one-performer solo harp multimedia show titled Scheherazade, inspired by a solo harp arrangement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade symphony (1888). McLaughlin commissioned composer Austin Gelber to write a 15-minute arrangement for solo harp of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade that would then be performed with an animated video of images inspired by the symphony. The first part of this scholarly essay details the process of composing and editing the arrangement. Music examples are included from the October 2013 original solo harp arrangement score and the finished 2015 edited score, highlighting arranging techniques that worked well and those that did not. The second part explains the process of creating the Scheherazade video. The animation was created by students at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, and the final video was edited by Daniel Wilson. McLaughlin worked with the students to guide animation image choices, ordered the animation for the video, and worked with Wilson to create a viable way to perform a synchronized live harp performance with a video. In the third section, there is an artistic and practical analysis of decisions McLaughlin made as artistic director of the Scheherazade project to frame the solo harp arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s work. Insights are shared concerning the development of the show in preparation for touring as well as adjustments to the show following audience feedback after initial performances.
