Abstract:The fundamental reason for this research project is to create an indigenous based music guidelines for individual vocal lessons (soprano) at the high school level in Kenya. The present curriculum neither includes indigenous music nor vocal lessons. This research project aims to (a) explore the history of music education in Kenya, (b) investigate the rationale for the use of indigenous music and how other African nations have incorporated indigenous music in their curriculum and finally, (c) provide indigenous materials to be included in the guidelines for teaching the soprano voice, at the high school level in Kenya. The inclusion of indigenous music in the core curriculum will foster national unity by the study of other ethnicities, noting that Kenya is a multiethnic country. This inclusion will also encourage further research and scholarship of Kenyan music which will prepare the students to be better able to compete at the local and global scenes.
