Abstract:As urban planners, knowing how to work with data is essential. Increasingly, this task has become less about analysis and more about finding innovative and engaging ways to tell stories. Planners can incorporate technology in both reaching the public and allowing the public to reach them. In other words, technology and open source data can be used to both create, publish, and listen to stories. These kinds of activities are classified as “civic technology.” This report contains recommendations and strategies on best utilizing the existing assets in Champaign-Urbana to establish a viable local civic technology group.
