Abstract:The performance of Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) has become crucial as the field of wireless communication continues to advance. Voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO)-based quantization consists of a highly digital structure and can overcome the limitations of analog circuit design using highly scaled devices. This work presents the design and implementation of a four-bit VCO-based ADC. The VCO is based on eight cross-coupled differential amplifiers stages. The performance of this VCO is analyzed by tuning the input voltage from 0.55 V to 0.85 V and the inherent noise-shaping property of a VCO-based design is shown. The work also discusses the current limitations of a VCO-based approach and possible future work is identified.
