Title: Response Modification of Bridges
Author(s): DesRoches, Reginald; Leon, Roberto T.; Dyke, Shirley
Subject(s): Mid-America Earthquake (MAE) Center Bridges
Abstract: The goal of this study is to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of typical bridges in Mid-America and explore economical methods for modifying their seismic response. The emphasis in this thesis is on superstructure retrofits. Field reconnaissance reports from past earthquakes indicate that many bridge failures could have been prevented with simple mitigation measures such as elastomeric bearings, isolation bearings or restrainer cables (Saiidi et al., 1995; Mayes, 1993). These mitigation strategies are commonly used on the West Coast. However, their effectiveness in Mid-America in not well understood.
