Abstract:Though less well known today than most of his contemporaries, the English composer Sir Arnold Bax (1883-‐1953) wrote a wealth of beautiful and powerful music in various genres. Bax’s music is full of interesting ideas, showing an array of various influences. His music is imaginative and evocative of scene and atmosphere, and at the same time stimulates the listener’s emotions. It cannot be categorized as belonging to any of the leading “isms” of the early twentieth century such as serialism, atonalism, neo-‐classicism, or nationalism. Instead Bax created his own unique style based on Irish and Celtic culture, experiences arising from his travels to other countries, and his impressions, both sensuous and emotional, of scenes and occasions. This thesis presents a brief biography of Bax, a discussion of his unique compositional style, and a study of his character pieces for piano written between 1915 and 1920. These pieces tend to recall the styles and characteristics of countries such as Ireland and Russia, and present Bax’s feelings and impressions arising from his travels and from particular events such as the death of his friend, Patrick Pearse.
