Abstract:The goal of this research is to improve a low-cost electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) imaging technique for defect and degradation detection in photovoltaic (PV) modules or cells. Our goal is to show that by using low-cost equipment, a modified DSLR camera, a single-board computer, and a transistor switching circuit, one can automate the process of EL/PL imaging of a PV module or cell and obtain comparable or superior defect maps to those produced by expensive status-quo equipment. Additionally we propose several techniques, split-spectrum illumination and imaging, active area focusing and optimal parameter selection, to improve contactless photoluminescence imaging.
