Abstract:As the focus of city development has shifted away from low-density urban sprawl driven by cars, active transportation including walking and biking has gained increasing priority in urban planning for its tremendous benefit to people's health, quality of life, and environment. Biking facilities are the key to encourage more people to consider traveling by bike. Roadway designs including elements that facilitate and invite biking will increase biking safety, improve bike transportation and raise the awareness of road sharing. With the aim of promoting biking facilities planning and design, this study examines intersection designs in the City of Champaign, evaluates their functions in accommodating bicyclists, and provides treatment approaches to address typical bicycle safety issues.
