The study was undertaken in order to obtain detailed information concerning the type of material found on the continental shelf off the Mid-Atlantic coast, the size and mineralogic composition of the material, the abundance and kind of organic remains, the distribution and origin of the sediment, and the conditions of sedimentation on the shelf today ... More than 700 samples taken from various positions on the continental shelf from Delaware Bay to Martha's Vineyard were studied.
