Description

Title:How is trust in political institutions affected by media coverage of corruption news?
Author(s):Valenzuela, Irina
Subject(s):Economics
Abstract:I study how media coverage of corruption news affects citizens' perception on political institutions in Peru. The image shows graphically the empirical strategy that I followed: I used newspapers front pages to measure the intensity of coverage of corruption news by media in general (assuming that different type of media are highly correlated). Therefore, using Peruvian newspapers’ front pages to construct a measure of intensity of corruption news coverage and the Peruvian Household Survey to evaluates citizens’ perception, I (preliminary) find that higher intensity of media coverage of corruption news decreases the level of trust in Congress and political parties, specially in urban areas in Peru.
