Title:Design parameters and considerations for a high-performance audio effects processor

Abstract:Today’s music electronics industry is saturated with effects “stompboxes”, small signal processors which modify or add to an input signal in some way. This research project concerns the design of such a device, using modern technologies, particularly the Super-Harvard Architecture (SHARC) processor family. We examine several existing digital effects designs and develop a set of design parameters to construct an original design of a stompbox. We then implement such a design on a printed circuit board, but time and workload prohibit the fabrication and testing of our design. We conclude that even though the SHARC processor meets the performance demands for our DSP application, additional cost and design challenges make it prohibitive and unattractive for most small designers.
