Abstract
First-generation East Asian educated immigrants (EAEI) in the United States face additional career development challenges. Besides lacking social networks and leadership role model for career development, the untranslatable cross-culture contextual resources require the population to invest more time and effort than their peers. The purpose of this study is to examine how EAEIs make sense of their career development in the U.S. workplace through the contextual factors in the choice and satisfaction models of SCCT. This qualitative study recruited six Mandarin-speaking EAEIs with purposeful snowballing sampling. Each semi-structured interviews time ranged from 60 to 90 minutes. The data were analyzed with both deductive and inductive thematic analysis. The research result merged into four themes: (1) process of learning about self and environment, (2) sense of growth, (3)work satisfaction, and (4) workplace contextual factors. These themes illustrated how native Mandarin-speaking EAEIs reflected their adjustment in the U.S. and further supports they need for further career development. The research finding implied the diversity of the Asian population in the U.S. and might require additional cultural-oriented organizational socialization resources.
