My background is in administration of library preservation programs; I have managed programs for the University of California, Berkeley campus, and for the nine campuses of UC for the last 16 years. My responsibilities have included long range planning, operations development and management, staff education and training, and fundraising largely through grants from public and private agencies.

In mid-95 I was asked to create an organization to develop, coordinate, and manage digital library projects for the UC Berkeley Library, drawing on administrative skills and experience from the preservation arena. See http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/R+D/ucblibrary.html for brief descriptions of DL projects at the UC Berkeley Library.

My particular interests in digital libraries cluster around three concerns:

  1. Methods and strategies for development and integration of digitally based library services to improve and expand traditional library services.

  2. A preservation management strategy for at least UC-created digital documents of permanent research value.

  3. A production system for conversion of documents (e.g., text, image, datasets) to enable digitization to become a preservation replacement tool to succeed microfilming and photocopying.
