The complexity, responsibility and accountability at any Research I university is highly scrutinized politically, academically and socially. The purpose of this dissertation research was to understand the major trends and critical factors that have led to turnover at the president or chancellor level at Research I universities. The major themes that resulted from the research were turnover significance, socieltal pressures, governance and demands of the job. The implications were to understand the pressures of functionality and profitability at Research I universities that exist in this dispensation of time, in addition to gleaning the parameters of success of presidents and chancellors and what the future landscape will possibly hold for universities affected by such turnover.
