<dc:description>Mechanism modeling is currently a very active area of Artificial
Intelligence. Several theories of mechanism modeling have resulted from
this work and have been applied to such tasks as simulation, analysis, and
troubleshooting in domains such as electronic circuit analysis and steam
plant operation.
This thesis addresses some of the issues involved in modeling the
domain of turbojet aircraft engine operation. A causal model of the turbojet engine, based on the kinds of relationships which exist between engine
parameters, is described. The utility and limitations of currently
accepted theories of mechanism modeling for modeling the operation of the
turbojet engine are also discussed, along with suggestions for overcoming
some of the limitations. Finally, the applications for qualitative models
of the turbojet engine are explored.
The current causal model has been implemented in INTERLISP-VAX on a
Vax 11/780 for the purposes of simulation and analysis, along with a facility for explaining the results of such a simulation.</dc:description>
