With roughly 70% of the midwestern United States dedicated to agriculture, private farming decisions will have a large impact on human and ecological communities. Despite the need for conservation farming, the adoption of such strategies has lagged. In response, agencies and researchers have examined ways to encourage the adoption of conservation farming practices. Social science research connected to conservation agriculture has generally focused on site-based change at the scale of a given farm. Recent reviews of the literature have called for a need to introduce new concepts and theories. In this dissertation, three peer-reviewed papers are presented along with introduction and conclusion chapters related to agrarian landscape change framed as part of regional place-making processes. Taking a regional approach advances the literature by considering place production as relationally influenced across varying spatial scales.
