The PIP was developed with the goal of making interest measures more accessible to U.S. individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). It is a self-assessment based on the RIASEC interest model (Holland, 1997). The PIP uses a 5-point emoji scale for respondents to indicate their level of interest in 10 work-related activities for each RIASEC type. The PIP items consist of black and white drawings with stick figures representing the characters, and no titles or descriptions are included. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the PIP, responses were collected from 306 university students in the Mideast region of the U.S. The PIP showed high internal consistency reliability (α ̅ =.89), significant convergent validity with the IP RIASEC scores (r ̅ = .89) and high-point codes (hit rate = 70%) and expected low discriminant validity correlations with remaining IP scales (r ̅ = .31). The PIP represents a promising approach to measuring vocational interests among individuals with LEP and other language-diverse populations. Further research is needed to evaluate the PIP’s fit to the RIASEC circular model and to develop drawings that better represent the Enterprising and Conventional types.
