The labels studied were: "woman," "girl," "gal, " "man, " "boy, " and “guy." Also investigated were differences in response patterns according to the sex and the age of the subject. The subjects were 178 male and female graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The usage and response patterns were analyzed using Chi-square tests and analyses of variance. The findings of both facets of the study are presented and possible implications for future research and the teaching of English as a Second Language are discussed . text Copyright owned by the author.
