Twenty-five essays were collected from each language group and analyzed for cohesive ties using Halliday and Hasan's categorization of cohesive devices. The results of the cohesive tie analysis for the two language groups were then compared using two-way analyses of variance. Correlation tests were also conducted which compared the Korean subjects' cohesive tie counts and their combined scores on the structure and cloze sections of the English Placement Test given at the University of Illinois. The results of these comparisons and correlations arc presented, and implications for future research and the teaching of English as a Second Language are discussed. text Copyright owned by the author.
