Walker, Corinne Theresa 2011-05-07T11:51:35Z 2011-05-07T11:51:35Z 10000-01-01 1989 The purpose of this study was to provide a research-based context for examining the health behavior and educational needs of elderly African American women. To describe this phenomenon, a sample of 182 African American women over age 55 was drawn from the 1986 National Survey of Access to Health Care Telephone Survey of 10,130 noninstutitionalized persons in the United States. The research reported in this study attempts to answer the following basic questions: (1) Does health insurance coverage affect health care utilization? (2) Does attitude toward the health care system affect health care utilization? (3) Does income affect health care utilization? (4) How does health status effect health care utilization? The results of this study suggest that effective health education should aid in reducing the extent of need for health services and supplement the efforts of health care providers in promoting the health of this population.
