It investigates ""domestic drama"" as a feasible forum for the comparison of traditional Chinese and English plays." Yuan tsa-chu and English domestic drama belong to the tradition of popular literature, which blends entertainment with instruction. Both moral and social, the two dramas share many similarities such as sensationalism, a familiar storyline, a common man/woman as the main character, domestic relations, and a happy ending. The first part of the dissertation studies how English domestic drama is defined, and how it can help to define certain Yuan tsa-chu as domestic drama. From the two groups of domestic plays the author selects four major themes for comparison.
