McGowan, Kevin Patrick 2011-05-07T13:00:32Z 2011-05-07T13:00:32Z 10000-01-01 1990 The archaeological record from the Shelbyville locality, located in east central Illinois, is examined through two alternative explanatory models of culture change. A traditional Migration model is examined to explain culture changes associated with the emergence of Mississippian culture. This model is rejected as inappropriate. The alternative Regional Interaction model is found suitable for explaining the occurrence of Mississippian material culture traits in the Woodfordian Northeast without significant underlying culture change. Three factors are underscored with this model. Change requires access to new information, a feasibility to apply the information and a willingness to use the information.
