Rowden, Martin Lawrence 2011-05-07T13:17:17Z 2011-05-07T13:17:17Z 10000-01-01 1996 This study documents chronologically the history of The Salvation Army Chicago Staff Band (CSB), between 1954 and 1994. Significant events occurring since the Chicago Staff Band's foundation in 1907, but prior to 1954, are also mentioned. Through a systematic and careful investigation of primary and secondary sources, in addition to responses from former CSB bandmasters, Danielson, Miller, and Rowland, to a questionnaire, the study also sought to answer the following questions: (i) What has been the repertoire of the Chicago Staff Band during the last 40 years and how has this repertoire changed or developed? (ii) Has the Chicago Staff Band maintained its standard of musical excellence and in what ways has it set the standards for other bands, within and outside of The Salvation Army, throughout the Central Territory and the United States. (iii) How has the Chicago Staff Band provided for the musical education of its players? (iv) What contribution has the Chicago Staff Band made to the music education of Salvationists and others throughout the Central Territory, the United States, and overseas. (v) What has been the primary purpose, musically and spiritually, of the Chicago Staff Band as seen by its respective bandmasters since 1954? The CSB has traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world, providing educational workshops and performances for Salvationists, brass band enthusiasts, and music educators. It has also been a catalyst for several American composers, whose works have become part of the standard repertoire for Salvation Army and other brass bands. Scholarships for members were introduced in 1974 and Band Schools have been offered in various population centers since 1988. "Since its foundation the CSB, the ""Band with the Sacred Message"" has influenced many people musically and spiritually as it has sought to fulfill its mission of presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music."
