Like the first generation after the disastrous collapse of the Babel Tower, the postmodernists endeavor to trace the presence of God, the Author and the only source of a true meaning of life, by means of the fragments only to find out His absence. The absence of the Supreme Authority guarantees an unlimited weaving of textuality, that is called the intertextuality. This thesis attempts to ""misread"" Antonin Artaud's writings on theatre in the postmodern perspective." In order to obtain a postmodern perspective, Chapter One investigates the literary, artistic, and philosophical conditions. Once obtained, the postmodern perspective is attested in Richard Schechner's theories on postmodern performance. Schechner's arguments involve the embryo of further discussion on Artaud and his theatre. For the first step of deconstructing Artaud's Theater of Cruelty, Chapter Two probes the theories of structuralism and semiotics and explores Michael Kirby's formalist theatre as an expedient exemplar. The discussion on Joseph Chaikin's Open Theatre foregrounds some interests of poststructuralism and paves the way to deconstruction of Antonin Artaud. Chapter Three elaborates the poststructuralist theory as a champion of postmodernism. By virtue of the poststructuralist theory, Artaud is deconstructed and reborn to be a postmodern man.
