However, there is minimal social work research pertaining to this shelter strategy. Instead, current knowledge focuses on the demographics of this population. Outcomes of shelter use are slowly becoming available. This exploratory research investigated the physical and social environment of a group transitional house using the ecological perspective and knowledge from the environment and behavior field. Through participant observation and interviews with six current and six former residents, the rehousing process is defined. Themes of the meaning of home, safety, and place-identity were found to be pertinent to the shelter experience. A conceptual framework is proposed to advance present knowledge concerning the effect a transitional housing experience has on the user. In addition, this research begins to demonstrate how the profession of social work can incorporate concepts from the environment and behavior field into its knowledge base.
