<dc:description>"We have measured the high temperature susceptibility
of dilute solutions of elements belonging to the first
transitional series in both liquid and solid copper. We
found that the solutes Crt Mn, Fe, and Co possess
localized magnetic moments in these alloys. The impurity
moments were calculated from the susceptibility and found
to change little on melting.
The Cu63 Knight shift in liquid copper is found to
be decreased by dissolved transition impurities with the
maximum decrease of about 20% for each atomic percent
of impurity occurring in the Cu-Mn solutions. The change
caused by magnetic impurities in the copper Knight shift
is found to depend inversely on temperature.
We have analyzed the Knight shift results using a
single OPW approximation for the conduction electrons and
the Friedel virtual bound state""picture for the transition
impurities. The resonance shifts predicted by this model
are smaller than those found experimentally for magnetic
solutes. Best agreement is found when the virtual bound
impurity states are described by a density of states band
which is confined to an energy range of 1.3 to 2.5 ev' and
drops sharply to zero at the edges. The impurity bands
for electrons of opposite spin appear to be displaced by
order 1 to 2.5 eVa"</dc:description>
