<dc:description>"Progress in the development of a tunable monochromatic phonon detector for use in experiments investigating the transmission of phonons (v > 10 GHz) through 4He at T S 0.1 K and 0 < P < 24 bars is described. The technique studied was the use of a magnetically tuned spin 1/2 system whose change in magnetization with incident phonon flux can be monitored by a pick-up coil coupled to a SQUID magnetometer.
Time-of-flight measurements versus pressure and tuning magnetic field were made to test the detection technique and showed good agreement with the measurements of others for phonon velocity and scattering in 4He versus pressure, but limited sensitivity to the magnetic field. We investigate probable causes of the ""broad band"" spectral behavior of this detector and make recommendations for future work and technique improvement."</dc:description>
