Drawing particularly upon a fresh analysis of the new Telephus-fragment (P. Oxy. LXIX 4708), it is argued that the poet consistently advocates an ethos of cautious courage, in accordance with which every warrior is required to remain with the fighting unit and individual action is discouraged. This ethos is situated within the context of the historical development of the hoplite phalanx, and it is suggested further that a similar ideology is to be found in the Homeric epics.
