Along with causing widespread poverty, the crisis intensified the migration process towards Metropolitan Lima, the traditional core of the country and capital city. Lima was unprepared for absorbing such a large migrant population. Migrants frequently found themselves unable to find jobs and physically unconnected with the economic center of the city. Strategic reforms and planning by national and metropolitan authorities were developed and, as a result of both, the Peruvian economy and metropolitan physical and economic conditions began to improve. Since then, Metropolitan Lima has experienced a drastic transformation: from experiencing a severe decline in population welfare due to the devastating national economic crisis, to becoming a more efficient city with an increasing wealth generation capacity, resulting from Peruvian openness to global economic trends. In order to understand this remarkable resurgence, I analyze the impacts of this economic transition on Lima’s spatial structure. Using nonparametric and semiparametric methods, I identify the location and effects of the main centers of economic activities, emphasizing their relationship with the spatial distribution of gross and sectoral employment, and thus providing a comprehensive evaluation of the success of the reforms and planning strategies in Metropolitan Lima.
