Although Rogério Duarte was one of the principal mentors of Tropicália—having acted as a theoretician and as an artist—and was, along with this, one of the initiators of post-modernity in Brazil, his legacy is yet to be incorporated into both the critical canon of Tropicália and post-modernity in Brazil. Moreover, Rogério Duarte's life, full of pitfalls, remains unknown. This in itself is also important to understanding his aesthetic and theoretical positions. Here, I make an inventory of Rogério Duarte's intellectual legacy and aesthetics through analysis of Notas Sobre o Desenho Industrial (Notes on Industrial Design) — a theoretical text published by Rogério Duarte in 1965 that, despite its focus on industrial design in Brazil, ended up being a reflection on post-modernity and 'tropicalism' in general.
