Volleyball is both ubiquitous and yet mostly relegated to mere footnotes in the histories of American team sport, a reflection of its status as an ""insurgent"" game hiding in plain sight. This dissertation examines the interfaces among colonizing evangelical sporting traditions of the Young Men’s Christian Association, military doctrine, and indigenous creative resistances that helped to drive volleyball's evolution beyond purely masculinist narratives of team sport."
