Kachru. My aim has been to analyze the sociolinguistic aspects of language use in the spoken Cairene Arabic with special reference to the use of terms of address. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 presents the problem and an exploration of theoretical aspects of the study, the purpose, and a brief description of the Arabic language as it is used today. Chapter 2 expands on the approach and includes samples and outlines of the study, methods and notation. Chapter 3 describes the Arabic language as it is used today, revealing how it has undergone many changes in the lexicon, grammar, syntax and in semantics. I present evidence to show that the spoken language differs from that employed in the past and that it will continue to change. Chapter 4 provides examples of code-switching and code-mixing. It includes a review of the literature on terms of address including previous research on the Arabic address system. Chapter 5 presents certain social variables in the framework of context of situations inherent in the use of the terms of address. Chapter 6 states the conclusions and the importance of the study. Educational ramifications and the need for further research related to the varieties of the language and relations to current educational practices are presented. Bibliography and vita are included.
