<dc:description>34 aryl carbamates which were synthesized in the laboratory and 4 commercial carbamates, were screened for delayed neurotoxicity in the White Leghorn hen. Several carbamates proved to be delayed neurotoxins with this ability being particularly concentrated in the thiocarbamates bearing short, unbranched alkyl sidechains. The toxicity of these compounds was further examined in Musca domestica (LD(,50)) and Culex quinquefasciatus (LC(,50)) to discern correlations between esterase inhibition and delayed neurotoxicity.</dc:description>
<dc:description>Various experiments were undertaken to determine a mode of action for carbamate delayed neurotoxins. These included electrophoresis of pertinent esterases and the examination of protective properties of these carbamates against a neurotoxic organophosphate. The phenomena of age and species specificity were also studied. The results of these experiments are equivocal, but they do not preclude the possibility that neurotoxic carbamates and organophosphates share a common site of action.</dc:description>
