<dc:description>A numerical model which includes an element suitable for analysis of walls including stiffness changes due to flexure and shear strains is presented. Sensitivity of calculated results to variations in initial stiffness, amount of viscous damping, and unloading slope of force-deformation curve was studied.</dc:description>
<dc:description>Calculated results were compared with experimental results using a method developed in this study. The comparison method, which is based on the Fourier Amplitude Spectra, was able to discriminate between computed solutions giving good and bad agreement with the experimental results.</dc:description>
<dc:description>A large-scale structure which had been previously tested as part of the US-Japan Cooperative Research Program was analyzed. Results suggested that the testing procedure (single-degree-of-freedom pseudodynamic loading) can underestimate the shear forces acting on the wall during a strong earthquake, and can lead to incorrect conclusions about the safety of the structure.</dc:description>
