Comer, Jess Jacob 2014-12-15T21:41:31Z 2014-12-15T21:41:31Z 10000-01-01 1987 1987 A study of 94 engineers and engineering managers in 13 companies was conducted to determine what skills engineers need upon entering industry. The study used a structured interview format. The interviews provided information on what engineers typically do in industry and what skills they feel are necessary to accomplish these tasks. The survey revealed five main areas in which the skills of recently graduated engineers are deficient. The first two areas are communication and group interaction skills. The third area includes problem solving and computer skills. The fourth area involves laboratory courses and the relationship between basic theory and the application of that theory. The fifth area includes exposure to industry and business practice. Possible reasons for the deficiencies of the current educational system are pointed out.
