<dc:description>A series of induction heating tests is conducted on class U 33-inch railroad car wheels to determine the behavior of initially stress free wheels subjected to axially symmetric thermal loadings. Residual stress levels after final cooling of the wheels is determined by a sectioning technique. Results from the tests are compared to predictions from two elastic-plastic axisymmetric finite element computer programs which incorporate temperature dependent material properties.</dc:description>
<dc:description>A boring technique is used to determine approximately the manufacturing stresses in a class C (rim quenched) 33-inch car wheel. Induction heating tests are conducted on class C wheels to determine the influence of manufacturing stress on wheel behavior. The use of finite element models is extended to include the manufacture process as well as subsequent thermal cycling.</dc:description>
