This paper reviews and integrates the available literature in a model of the determinants of occupational gendertypes, and presents two studies designed to test portions of the model. The first experiment examined the effects of different types of information about the sex of an occupation's incumbent(s); results revealed that the overall sex composition of an occupation has a substantial influence on its gendertyping, but the sex of a specific job incumbent does not. The second experiment explored the role played by gender stereotype-occupational characteristics congruence in the gendertyping of occupations. Results showed that an occupation's gendertype is affected by the gender stereotypy of its task-related attribute requirements. Results from these studies support many of the model's major propositions; practical implications for modifying occupational gendertypes are also discussed.
