Stimpert, John Lawrence 2014-12-17T21:42:37Z 2014-12-17T21:42:37Z 10000-01-01 1992 Much of the diversification literature, by focusing almost exclusively on the relationship between diversification strategy and firm performance, suffers from a lack of appreciation for the complex web of external and internal factors that confront the managers of these firms. As Grant, et al. suggest, the "total impact of diversification on performance depends on complex interactions between diversification strategy, corporate capabilities and resources, and external environment" (1988: 795). How managers understand this complex web of interactions will no doubt be an important influence the success of their firms' diversification strategies. Instead of reexamining the relationship between diversification strategy and firm performance, this study examines how the managers of large diversified firms see and understand the diversity of their firms and how these understandings influence their management of diversity. By examining these issues, this thesis makes an important contribution to the study of diversification and improves our ability to interact constructively with practicing managers.
